Certificates of Vital Events

The Registrar General's Department is the only organisation in Jamaica responsible for producing certified copies of vital records, for births, deaths, marriages and adoptions which occurred in Jamaica or Jamaican Waters.
Certificates produced by the Registrar General's Department include:

Birth certificate: An official certificate of the information registered in the Registrar General's Department when someone is born, including parental information, and the date and place of birth. Birth certificates are used to support an individual's identity.

Death certificate: An official certificate of the information registered in the Registrar General's Department when someone dies, including the date, place and cause of death, the person’s occupation and the name of marriage partner if relevant. A Burial Order is NOT a death certificate.

Marriage certificate: An official certificate of the information registered in the Registrar General's Department when a male and female, including date and place they were married, their place of birth and residence, the officer who conducted the marriage and the names of their father.

No impediment certificate: An official certificate of the results of a search for marital status where the individual was not married. A letter is given if marriage is located.

Adoption Certificate: An official certificate of the information registered in the Registrar General's Department when a child was adopted. This is sometimes referred to as a Certificate of Adoption, and is in two forms. The Long Form includes the names of the adoptive parents, the name, date and place of birth of the adopted child. The Short Form does not bear the word ‘Adoption’ neither the names of the adoptive parents. Customers have the option of securing a long or short form certificate.

Certified copies of vital records are produced upon request and are delivered by independent couriers to the address you specify on your application form.
